Wellington, August 10. Replying to questions put, it was stated that— The ten per cent reduction had bpun granted to Judge Harvey, and on the representation of ex-Judge Weston that he was equally entitled to the refund, Governmeat had acceded to the request. The refund had been made since papers on the subject were laid on the table. After the Estimates were passed last year no reduction lVrank or pay, besides the ten per cent, had taken place amongst sergeants and constables in the police force, In answer to Mr Weston. the Minister cf Education said he did not see his way to establish a High School at Greymouth. The Goldfields Committee have recommended the total abolition of the Gold Duty. , , .^ The refund made to ex Judges Harvey and Weston was made in conformity with a resolution passed, that as these officers were dismissed the tenjper cent should be repaid. The amount paid Harvey was £20, and Weston £19, the latter being paid on the 31st July last. It was not the intention of Government to make similar concessions to other public ser* rants simply on their application for tbe same, August 16. Yesterday afternoon's sitting was devotedjto consideration/of"lhe .Estimates, and the evening was taken up by a dreary debate on the Eepresentation Bill. Tbe Westland and IS el son members opposing population basis, as they both lose members by it. Nearly all the; members agreed in condemning representation on population basis, but no other suggestion was offered. The debate will be resumed to-night, Dunedin August 15. A fire at Deborah Bay, Port Chalmers, on Sunday night, destroyed a seveuroomed house the property of Mr Julier. Il was insured for £350 in tbe National, The loss is over £200. At the inquest on tbe carpenter killed by a fall from aloft on the [steamer Hero, a yerdict of accidental death was returned acquitting the officers of all blame. Timabu, August 15. The inquiry into the late fire at Moses's j Cash Palace, Timaru, last week, occupied all day. A verdict of arson was returned against Abraham and Louis Moses. At the Eesident Magistrate's Court to day, Thomas Nees, a young man, was charged with rape. Medical evidence failed to show that the alleged offence had been committed and the accused was discharged.
