London, Januay 19. Int elligence has been received from India that Thebau, King of Burmah, is dying. It is stated that unmistakeable signs of insanity have developed themselves, and his condition is such that his death is regarded as imminent. At Cork a very excited feeling is manifested, and the city is practically under military control. Sentries are placed in the streets', and all passers-by are subject to challenge. The utmost precautions are considered necessary to prevent a disturbance. Much alarm has been caused in the United States by the spread of smallpox. . From circumstances arising out of the trial of Guiteau, a Bill has been introduced into the United States Congress, for the purpose of denning legal insanity. A steamer has just arrived at Liverpool from New Orleans, which reports that mucli damage was occasioned to the vessel during the voyage by the explosion of an infernal machine, and the outrage is attributed to Fenian agency, and strict investigation is being held into the circumstances. A sculling match has been arranged to take place on the Thames, on 20th June, between Hanlan and Ross, the former having already left New York for the, purpose of training on the Thames. A dreadful massacre by American Indians has just taken place in Arizona, and twetity persons wer& murdered. Rev. G. Sanger, a dissolute clergyman, who was Vicar of Carl ton, North Allei'ton, in the North Riding of Yorkshire, has just been committed for trial on a charge of having set fire to his church. He was subsequently discharged. A barmaid at Spiers and Pond's criterion restaurant, in Pieadilly, recently committed suicide. At the in.
cjuest it transpired that she had been seduced by Lieut. Ponsonby, a Naval officer, and that she had committed suicide in consequence. The jury censured Ponsonby, and he has since been dismissed from the Navy. One person implicated in the theft of the body of the late Earl Crawford from the family vault, Aberdeenshire, has offered to disclose the place where it is secreted. The largest .steel steamer yet built has been launched at Belfast ; she has been named the Garfield, and is intended for the Australian trade. Sir Hercules Eobinson Governor of the Cape, has been appointed Governor of British Franskei territory. Melbourne. January 14. A seaman on the schooner Zephyr, from Greymouth, missed his hold when aloft, and fell on deck. His death was instantaneous. The ship Allinshaw, from London, has arrived, and reports that a seaman fell overboard : a boat was launched, and proceeded in search of him, but the boat filled and disappeared. The mate clung to the boat, a seaman^ .w-iio ancompftmed him was drownod; also one who fell from the vessel.
