maining stages without discussion. The latter was amended on the motion of the Colonial Treasurer so as to provide tli.it the amount of duty shquld l>e L7OOO. As to the correctness of which sum it was stated the Com- < missioner of Stamps and the trustees of the Rhodes estate wore alike perfectly satisfied. The bill was read a 3rd time and passed. The Minister of Public Works moved the second reading of the Tramways East Coast and Hot Lakes Districts Railway Bill, which was carried, as was also the second reading of the Public Reserves Sale Bill. Minister of Public \\ orks moved that the House go into Committee of Supply with a view of considering the Public Works Estimates. After discussion -Mr Hursthouse moved by way of amendment " I hat in the opinion of this Ho.use the salary of the Governor ought not to exceed £5000 per annum, inclusive of all allowances and that the Government be requested to introduce a bill to give efloct to tkttt expression of opinion. Mr Buchanan seconded the amendment, which, however was lost by 41 to 32. The House rose at 5 a.m, The Public Works Estimates having been -got through without a single alteration.
