Sergt. F«>x committed suicide this morning Wy swallowing half a pint of carbolic acid. The deceased had been drinking heavily lately, and went home at an early hour last night in a state of intoxication. Fox had been a sergeant of the 14th Regiment, and was decorated with the Crimean, Turkish, and New Zealand medals. On retiring from the service h« was ap pointed Drill-Instructor to the Volunteers; afterwards Depot-Master, ami lately he was Immigration Officer, and had charge, of the Refuge under the Charitable Aid Board. He leaves a widow and a numerous grown up family. Chkistchurch, 2. A private letter leceived her« states that the Kaiapoi Woollen Co's manu« factures attracted much attention at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition, and that the Prince of Wales had ordered a suit of their material from a West End tailor. The Mayor of Cristchurch sent a congratulatory telegram to the Mayor of Kaipoi on the subject to-day. Auckland. 3. The Auckland Dairy Cos., premises at Remuera, were completely destroyed by fire at 8.80 this morning. The buildings consisted of a large wooden cow shed, grain, and milk stores, etc. Stephen Spalding, formerly employed as sub-roana»er »>y the company, surrendered himself t> tho police as having deliberately caused the fire. While the fire was ra^i-n? Spalding roused the company's employees, and
told them that he had set tire to the building, and put powder under them to blow them up. He left the company's employment some time ago, owing to a dispute about dismissing a boy, and since then had threatened the manager's life.. Besides the buildings a large quantity of milk, etc., was destroyed. The building was insured for LSOO in the Colonial office. When taken to the guard •'room Spalding repeated the statement that he had set fire to the building. ' ■ Later. At the Remuera fire kwo oows were roasted alive. Spalding was brought up at the police court slid remanded. His behaviour was so Hgantric that no doubt is entertained thai he is insane.
