RAILWAY SERVICE.
NEAV REGULATIONS. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Sept. 10. The Minister of Railways announces the early Gazetting of new regulations concerning the service conditions for railway apprentices. The present dual system of cadets and apprentices is considered to be unsatisfactory since the former does not provide trade training, while the latter provides nothing else. Under the new regulations apprentices will be given theoretical instruction as well, the idea being to enable them to become engineers with the practical side fully developed. The regulations also provide for training classes, examinations and scholarships. Apprentices in future will not be admitted without a Standard VI. pass, and it will be necessary for those in the maintenance and locomotive branches to attend technical school two nights weekly, and the department will refund the fees if the attendance and work are satisfactory. Two or more scholarships of four years’ tenure will be provided, and anv holder passing the engineering entrance examination before the age of 23 will receive a two-year course at Canterbury College.
