RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE.

ROMAN CATHOLIC EMANCIPATION.

CELEBRATION IN LIVERPOOL,

(United Service.) LONDON, Sept. 9. Three hundred thousand people from all parts of Lancashire, the largest gathering of Roman Catholics ever seen in Britain, attended High Mass in Tliingwell Park, Liverpool, yesterday, in celebration of the centenary of Roman Catholic emancipation. Bishop Dobson celebrated High Mass at a large altar erected on an eminence. Some sections of the park were so crowded that there was no room to kneel. The elevation of the Host was heralded by the roll of drums and the sounding of bugles. The heat was so oppressive that 600 people collapsed; 200 fainted and were carried oif on stretchers. Amplifiers carried the singing of the choir to all parts of the park. Archbishop Downey delivered a sermon. He stated that the vast concourse was celebrating an historic victory, setting the seal on the liberty wherewith Christ made man free. Twenty-five thousand attended a similar service in Glasgow. BISHOP OF ARMIDALE. SYDNEY, Sept. 9. Dr. John Coleman, Administrator of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Armidale, was, yesterday consecrated Roman Catholic Coadjutor Bishop of Armidale.
