MAGISTRATE’S COURT

FAILURE TO FURNISH RETURN. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr J. L- Stout, S-M-> the Commissioner of Taxes (Mr Cooke) proceeded against E. A. Feiirnley (Mr Laurenson) for failure to furnish a return of lands. Mr Cooke stated that no returns liad been made by defendant since 1923. He had been notified on occasions, but this year he had sent in no returns at all. The amount of tax defendant was liable for was only £5. Mr Laurenson submitted that there had been no attempt or inte it to evade payment of the tax and defendant was only a small land owner. Ho had always paid the. tax, and the failure to make the returns was only an oversight and a misunderstanding of his obligations. Defendant was fined £2, with 10s costs, and ordered to pay £2 2s solicit°r S f6 °’ MISCELLANEOUS. Z. A. Morton, for suffering his chimney to he on fire, was mulcted in the sum of 10s, with 10s costs. For failing to give information to the police when requested to do so, Rnnjit Singh was'* fined £2, with 10s costs. Sergeant Moriarty stated that he and Constable Grant had endeavoured to obtain certain information from defendant, but without success.
