MARTON BOWLING CLUB. (From Our Own Corespondent). MARTON, Sept. 14. Tho annual mcoting of the Marton Bowling Club attracted a fair attendance, Mr F. Purnell presiding. Tho report referred to a very successful year, and dealt with inter-club and club championship games. A slight falling off in the number of members was noted, the present roll being 44. The finances were disclosed to be in a healthy position, the liabilities being £125 and the assets £375. Thanks were accorded Messrs W. McNab, D. Morrison and G. A. Ferens for assistance given with the green and pavilion. Mr F. Purnell was re-elected president, with the following executive: Vice-presidents, Mevil's J. Hunter and J. Shine; secretary and treasurer, Mr N. Atkinson; green supervisor, Mr D. Morrison; assistant supervisor, Air G. W. Bnown; committee, Messrs J. Mogridgo, G. A. Ferens, O. Brabyn, A. Way, F. Connell, A. Smart. W. Braggins and officers ex-officio; auditor, Mr R. Wilson; delegate to Wanganui Centre, Mill. G. Simpson. Several new members were elected. Reference was made to the sterling service rendered to the club by tho late Air Otto Neumann. Tho opening day is October 16. CRICKET CLUB. At tho annual meeting of the Alarton Cricket Club last night, there were indications that a successful season is assured in the coming summer. Air A. H. Bill presided over a good attendance. The annual report referred to the success of club players in tho Rangitikei averages, and dealt with the individual performances of other players. _ Receipts totalled £34 14s sd, and expenditure £25. Assets were set down at £29 9s lid, with a balance over liabilities of £l6 Is lid. The following officers were elected: —President: Air A. H. Bill; vice-presidents, Alessrs J. W. Alarshall, P. J. Sladden, A. H. Griffin, B. Lambert and W. J. Simpson; club captain, Air A. S. Staples; bon. secretary and treasurer, Air D. 13. Sladden; committee, Messrs D. Barton, K. G. Biss and R. C. Ball; selection committee, Alessrs A. Staples, R. C. Ball, D. B. Sladden; delegates to Rangitikei Association, Alessrs A. Staples, R. C. Ball, D. B. Sladden and D. Barton. Alessrs Ball and Barton ure recruits from Broadway C.C. Thursday was selected as practice night. It was decided to enter a team for tho Arkwright Shield (for junior players). A motion that in future matches extend to two days was lost. The association was voted £5 towards the cost of the AI.C.C. match at Marton in January. GENERAL. A successful “flag 500” party was held by the Alarton town queen committee, the prizee going to Air and Airs Albert Wing and Air and Airs T. Barton; consolations, Airs and Aiiss Ncilson, and Airs and Aiiss Wilkie.
The following scores were registered at the weekly shoot of the Alangaonoho Rifle Club: J. Healey 70, K. G. Dalzieil 68, F. Paget 68, H. Shackleton 68, G. Dalzieil 68, C. Stephenson 68, G. Dunbar 68, C. Plummer 68, 11. Robertson 68, J. Hardie 64, J. O’Neill 63, H. Guthrie 63, K. Stace 62. A sweepstake was won by H. Shackleton. The Aiaori v. l’akeha football match at Alarton to-day was a very scratch affair, neither team being as published and both having to obtain outside assistance at the last minute. Nevertheless, there was sufficient good play on both sides to enable the selector to get material for the representative match against the touring Taranaki team on Wednesday next. Th° Alaoris won by 20 points to 16. At a meeting of the Taihape branch of the Plunkct Society it was reported that the Returned Soldiers’ Association had decided to hold a dance in aid of the branch funds. The secretary was instructed to write to Plunket headquarters and express appreciation of the excellent work done by Nurse Grant during her term as relief nurse. Aiesdamcs Glenny and Hayman were appointed a visiting committee. Aiiss Agnes Young, representing the British and Foreign Bible Society, gave an interesting address to the liuntcrville branch of the organisation. A committee set up in Huntorville to deal with the proposed establishment of a library and reading room has framed its report, which will be presented at tho next meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. It is very probable that the new institution will take definite shape at an early date. • , , ~ A new game to Alartomans, pushball, was displayed in crude fashion in the park to-day, the proceeds being in aid of the sports queen fund. Post entries were received and there were numerous competitors, but the long-anticipated fun was lacking. The lack of knowledge of _ the game made the result indecisive, but it is hoped to hold another similar competition at a later date. The final meeting in connection with the administration of the fund raised in Alarton district in aid of Aiiss Barlow, of Ractihi, who lost one foot and had the other badly crushed in a railway accident at Porewa some months ago, was held yesterday, when the accounts were passed and the disposal of tho balance approved. It was mentioned at a meeting of Loyal Alarton Lodge, AI.U., 1.0.0. F., that the Friendly Societies’ Council was trying to arrange a combined meeting of lodge members in Alarton in order to discuss the question of joining up with the Hospital Association. Representatives of two associations in tho district are to be invited to attend and enlighten the meeting as to the advantages of their respective schemes. Aleanwhile, members of tho Alarton Lodge are joining up with the Alanawatu Association and several more joined last night. PERSONAL. Aiiss Rona Higgins, of Napier, is visiting Hunterville. Airs W. Craig has been appointed president and Airs L. J. Thompson secretary of tho Hunterville branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society. Airs J. B. Barrington has been elected a member of the Alarton Plunket committee.
