BAINESSE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
BAINESSE, Sept. 17. The friends of Mr and Mrs Nelson Macaulay met ion Friday evening last at the school and the popularity of Mr Macaulay as a resident previous to his marriage was evinced by the large gathering which assembled. A singular coincidence was that it wa3 thirteen years to that date that he came to reside in Bainesse. Though now living at Shannon the settlers here arranged to meet him and his bride amidst his old surroundings. The school was packed to its utmost and during the evening Mr H. Bond, on behalf of the residents of Bainesse, asked Mr-and Mrs Macaulay to accept as a token of good wishes a handsome barometer in oak. Mr H. Simmons also spoke on behalf of him6elf, two brothers and the residents of Mangawhata, who had known their guest for many years previous to his coming to Bainesse, and ho was sure it gave them all groat pleasure to be present that evening. On behalf of Mangawhata friends he washed them every good wish ip their new married life. Mr Macaulay suitably replied. Musical honours were sung and dancing continued at intervals. Several Maori items were given by the Maori school children and a haka by several young Maori men added a warm greeting. Mesdamee Pearce, Andrew and Millard and Misses Bond and Robertson controlled the supper and Miss McKenzie supplied excellent music for the dances.
