NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.

AUCKLAND, Jan. 26The New Zealand lawn tennis championships were continued to-day, when food progress was made in all sections. he weather was beautifully fihe again, and there was a large attendance. The presence of the New South Wales women’s team lent additional interest to events in, their sections. There were no surprises in the second round of the men’ single, although there, were one or two instances of prominent players being fully extended. Thi was notable in the match between A. C. Stedman, the New Zealand champion, and N. Smith, the Rotorua champion. This match went the full five sets. Only in the last two did Stedman show superiority. W. Patterson, a seeded player from Canterbury, was also extended to five sets in the first round match' with Jones the Maori exponent. Patterson was suffering from foot trouble and this hampered his movements somewhat. He was beaten by R. A. Court, the North* Island champion, in the second round.

H. A. Barnett, N. R. 0. Wilson, the France brothers, E. L. Bartleet, J. T. Laurenson, N. G. Sturt, and O. Angas all seeded players, were successful in their matches in the second .round. Miss Lloyd, manageress of the New South Wales team, played for the first time in Auckland, nhd made a good start in the ladies’ singles, beating Miss Miller. All other members of the visiting team were successful in the first round, and in the seond round Mrs Moleswortli accounted for Mrs Napier. Detailed scores are as follow. MEN’S SINGLES.
