3.15 P.M. EDITION
CHINESE AND JAPANESE.
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received January 29, 12.0 noon. SHANGHAI, Jan. 28. At four o’clock this morning serious fighting was continuing at Chapei, while a huge fire was rapidly spreading throughout the whole district. It is estimated that over 1200 Chinese houses and buildings have been destroyed. After a fairly stubborn resistance the Chinese troops commenced to retire before the steady pressure of the Japanese, who brought reinforcements from, naval vessels. The Chinese forces have now retreated to .the railway station, which the Japanese are preparing to attack at daylight. Three Japanese aeroplanes are now flying over Shanghai, despite the darkness. Thus far the International Settle* ment is unharmed, though stray bullets are dropping .in areas in the vicinity of the boundaries.
