EMPIRE CHAMPIONSHIP
-“I LONDON, Jan. 28. For the first time in England a coloured boxer lias been permitted to fight in the Empire championship, following the recent withdrawal of the ban on coloured contestants. The Canadian heavyweight, .Larry Gains, drew' with the South African, Don McCorkindale, in a 15-round contest in' the Albert Hall. The last important mixed contest was when Sam Langford knocked out Iron Hague. Gains’s height is 6 feet 2 inches and his reach 80 inches. . McCorkindale’s height is 6 feet If inches and his reach 76 inches. Gains weighed 15st lib, and McCorkindale 14st 2Jlb. . , ,' , It was a magnificent battle, and the contenders scored almost ‘ point for point. McCTorkindale rattled Gains in the sixtlr round with a hook to the jaw-. The Canadian temporarily stood sitll, and- the South African repeated the blow, but Gains came again and there were brilliant exchanges. Gains repeatedly mauled McCorkindale’s left ear. . Both continued ftill of fight, and Gains was cautioned for striking low in the eleventh round. The contest was very'fierce m the final rounds, each seeking a knockout. In the fifteenth they stood m the centre of the. ring giving punch for punch. . , • ■ Camera, who is matched to box Gains in June, was present at the ringside.* . WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP. , ’ CHICAGO, Jan. 28. Jack Fields, of Los Angeles, regained the world’s welterweight championship, being awarded the decision in a 10-round bout with Lou Brouillaire, of Worcester, who won the title from “Young” Jack Thompson.
