DIAMOND JUBILEE

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. ORGANISER APPOINTED. A meeting of the committee appointed to arrange a suitable programme to celebrate the diamond jubilee ot the city and district was held last evening, Mr G. Tremaine presiding ini the absence of the Mayor (Mr A. E. Maiisford), who was in Wellington on busilieas. , , ~, The following, in response to letters sent out at an earlier meeting, were added to the committee: Messrs A. .J. Graham (rCpi'escntiiig the Chamber ot Commerce), L. H. Collinson (ManauatuWairarapa Employers’ Association), W. J. Woollett (Takaro Progressive Association), J. R- Hardie (Manawatu Rugby Union), Rev. F. S. Ramson (Ministers’ Association), and Captain A. Bongard (defence authorities). Mr and Mrs F. W. Gowing wrote stating that, while they were not able to attend meetings, they would lie prepared to accommodate some old pioneers in connection with Old Identities’ Day. The sub-committee appointed for the purpose recommended the appointment of Mr H. E. Rennett as organiser at a salary of £IOO and this was duly confirmed. The chairman suggested that the setting up of the various sub-committees should be held over until the organiser had brought down a report. This also applied to the ladies’ committee, he said. The suggestion was adopted. It was agreed that Mr J. A. Nash, in co-operation with the organiser, should take charge of the arrangements for Old Identities’ Day. The chairman stated that Mr Nash had shouldered this responsibility with conspicuous success on a previous occasion. Mr Woollett suggested that any profits from the jubilee should be devoted to installing electric floodlights on tile Sportsground, but the chairman said that this matter could well be deferred. He pointed Out that it had been earlier suggested that the profits should go to re-roofing the grandstand at the Showgrounds. An offer by Mr Borham to operate a public address system at a roduced fee was noted for future reference.
