PUBLIC WORKS.
IMPROVEMENT OF HIGHWAYS. LARGE NUMBERS ENGAGED. Between 60 and 70 men are now employed on the No. 60 highway (Palmerston North to Levin via Shannon) in improving the corners and cutting deviations. The new road line calls for at least two large cuttings being made, and these are now being put through, trucks on rails, and drays, being employed for the removal of spoil. It is expected that the deviation at Church Hill, in- the Pohangina Valley, will be in use in about three months’ time. The earth-work for the new road line.has now been practically completed, and the concrete is being poured for the piers and abutments of the new bridge. The construction of the bridge is necessary before the undertaking can be carried much further. Over 60 men are engaged on the construction of the new road across tho Ruahine Ranges, just north of the Manawatu Gorge and leading from Saddle Road, Woodville, to a point near Ashhurst. The road has now reached well down the western side of the range, having been started from Saddle Road, but it is not thought that the bridge required to span the Pohangina. River will be erected ior some tune yet, although it will have to be built eventually. When the road is finished stock will be able to ford the riv-er to reach, the new routo from Ashhurst, but the river will not be negotiable to cars.
