Utuwai
From Our Own Correspondent. On November 25, Mr. Lange, tho agricultural inspector, visited the Utuwai School, and expressed himsc-lf as being very pleased with the general conditions of the school and its environments. On Monday evening last a committee meeting was held in tho school room to decide upon tho breaking-up functions. It was decided to hold the annual prize-giving ceremony next week, and the school picnic in February of next year. The proficiency examination was held in the Utuwai School on December 1. The school year terminates on the 16th inst. Hopes are being entertained that a branch of the Women's Institute will be formed at Utuwai, and the prospect is being enthusiastically welcomed by all local women and girls.
Shearing is now completed except in a few instances where the shearing of lambs has been postponed for a short time. Owing to the comparatively dry winter which has passed, tho wool has been in bettor condition than usual this year. Farmers report a larger and generally better clip. This is most satisfactory and gratifying. Also, this is proving an excellent season for dairying pursuits and every convenience is at hand for the conveyance of cream to tho factories.
For the most part, hay is not yet ready to be cut, but the pastures appear to promise a satisfactory harvest. This has proved to be one of the best seasons experienced in Utuwai for the rearing of Southdown lambs. More farmers are breeding this particular type of lamb, and report that they arc in good condition. A resident of Utuwai has had the misfortune of losing a valuable horse at Ashhurst, by its being gored to death by a bull. The horse was so badly mutilated that it died of its wounds almost immediately.
A party of local men made an expedition to the Pohangina Gorge last week, w T kere they had good results at shag shooting. Church was held at Utuwai on Sunday last, and a fair number congregated. This servico takes place at Utuwai only once a month, on an average, and is conducted in the school.
