Women’s Division of The Farmers" Union

PALMERSTON NORTH BRANCH. Mrs. Howell (Raurnai) presided over the monthly meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, helil yesterday at Messrs. Collinson and Cunninghamo’s. Also present -were: Mesdames Cunninghame, Green, Doherty, Nicholls, Davison, Shannon, Best and Field. There were apologies from Mesdames Armstrong and Arlidge. A report was presented on the recent shop effort, the proceeds from which exceeded £2B. This was considered an unqualified success and grateful thanks were expressed to all those who had assisted, particularly Mrs. Sutherland for the loan of the shop and Mr. Chcyne for cartage from Pohangina. Mrs. E. Shaw (hon. secretary) was granted three months’ leavo of absence, Mrs. Field to act in this capacity for that period. Remits for the provincial council meeting to bo held at Marton were before tho meeting. Mesdames Howell, Green and Shannon will represent the branch at this meeting. It was resolved to donate 30s to the fund recently opened to provide a gift to commemorate Mrs. C. C. Jackson’s three years of offico as Dominion president. Following the business meeting a very pleasant social afternoon was held in the big Toom, there boing a large attendance which included Miss Joan Russell, tho Farmers’ Queen for the forthcoming carnival. A vory delightful programme had been arranged and wtas Opened by Mrs. Riddell with a pianoforte selection. Others contributing to the afternoon’s pleasure wero Miss Doreen Saunders (elocutionary items), Miss G. Cameron (vocal solos) and Miss Z. Leaniy (piano solos). Miss Dorothy Stevens was tho accompanist. Thanks to tho performers were conveyod by Mrs. Howell. Messrs. W. G. Black and W. S. Black as representing the executive of the Farmers’ Queen committee, waited on tho meeting to solicit the support of the Division in the efforts being made for the carnival. At the suggestion of these gentlemen the ladies agreed to consider undertaking the catering at the forthcoming spring show, the following sub-eommitteo being set up: Mesdames Howell, Turner (Eairanga), H. Sinclair, Croucher, J. A. McLeavey, J. A. Russell, Bond, O’Donnell and Field with power to add. Various activities wcto suggested such as concerts, garden parties and a country ball in all of which the members promised. their co-operation.
