THRESHING RETURNS.
By Telegraph
(Special to the Oamaru Mail.) Wellington, May 10.
Nearly all the threshing returns of wheat have reached the Government, and a conclusive estimate of our. resources under this heading will soon be available.
Replying to a criticism that all threshing machine proprietors do not fumiish the information needed and that the statistics therefore are incomplete, the Prime Minister states that he has asked the. Registrar-General to find put if possible the threshing machineowners who have failed to furnish returns. Every traction engine registered and the purpose for which it is used has to be stated, so that in the. .Premier's opinion the Government will be able to make a thorough check of threshing; As for the oats supply, Mr Masse y states that threshing is light in Southland, and the Registrar-General believes that the shortage will be greater than was at first anticipated. The Defence Department has been using large quantities to dry feed hundreds of horses at Trcntham camp and to provide sufficient 'feed on transports and for a short period after landing.
