LIFE SAVINGS LOST
To have lost his life savings, amounting to over £4OO in cash, while he was a patient in the Auckland Hospital, was the experience of Mr J. McCann, who was living in a boarding house at Freeman’s Bay, Auckland, where he also rented a confectionery shop attached. Mr McCann kept his money in a wardrobe in tins of various kinds, and it included over £IOO in silver. Mr McCann, who is aged 68 and a bachelor, had been living at the boarding house and renting the shop for 16 years. He entered hospital on July 30. and a friend, Mr J. Counihan. is looking after his interests. Mr Counihan discovered the loss last Sunday night, and the time of the removal of the money has been fixed at between noon on Saturday and 8 p.m. on Sunday. Both the wardrobe and the room had been locked, and there was no sign of either lock having been forced. It was explained, however, that both the locks were of a common variety, and that other keys might easily havebeen used.
