I have the honour to forward herewith a schedule of pieces of Crown lands in and near the City of Wellington, and'shall be obliged if you will kindly allow your District Valuer, Mr. Martin, to supply valuations at which the various parcels of land could be either offered for sale at auction for cash, or, if thought advisable to do so, be disposed of privately without competition to the adjoining owners at a fair price. John Strauchon, Commissioner of Crown Lands. 9443/345.

Sir,— Wellington, N.Z., 2nd May, 1907. The Government recently took possession of a small section of land on Wellington Terrace, immediately opposite the Wellington Club, which is now required in the interests of improvement by the City Council. The Council are desirous of creating a low-level street in Woodward Si reel, running from Lambton Quay to Wellington Tot race, and making the present portion of Wellington Terrace in that quarter practically a high-level street. To accomplish this it is necessary that

the Council should absorb some 4 or 5 perches of the present section at the corner of Woodward Street. This would, however, mean so serious a loss of space as to make the compensation to be paid by them very heavy, and possibly prevent the improvement taking place. This, however, could In , avoided if the Council wore in the position <>f being able to transfer to the owner of the corner section a section of somewhat similar size and value—the one recently vested in the Government. We shall, therefore, be glad to know if the Government would assist the matter by placing a fair price upon the latter section, when the City Counoil and the owner oould adjust the matter, and a very necessary public work be made possible. We have the honour to be, Sir, Your obedient servants, Macdonald, Wilson, and Co. The Secretary, Crown Lauds Department, Wellington.

The Hon. the Minister of Lands. 41034/91. Sin, — The Mayor's Offioe, Wellington, sth September, l!) 07. The Wellington Council, being anxious to obtain a little land from Mr. T. K. Maodonsld tor the purpose of improving Woodward Street, asked him to make an arrangement with the Council. Be made- what we considered advantageous terms to the Council, and they were completed. They involved the Council applying to the Land Department for the giant of a piece of land adjoining, and, if successful, passing it over to Mr. Macdonald at the valuation put on it. The Department has valued it at what Councillors think a fairly high price, hut as it is Mr. Macdonalde , affair, no question is raised on that point. 1 however find that the Council, once acquiring the land, cannot sell it again; but 1 am also advised thai we can ask the Crown, in pursuance of the arrangement, to make the grant to Mr. Macdonald direct, we paying you the purchase-money, and he paying us. The work is one which we hoped to have done last year, as it is somewhat urgent, and will make a great improvement in the way from Lambton Quay to the Terrape. May 1 ask you to co-operate witli us in carrying out the arrangement. The Department has already agreed to sell to the Council at a sum fixed. All that we ask is that the grant should lie made to Mr. Macdonald on the same terms, he having arranged to give us what we want. Yours ohed'ly, T. W. Hisi.op.

Extract from the Minutes of Land Board Meeting held on Thursday, 19th December, 1907. The following applications for land were approved: —

True extract.—G. Wright. 5/6/08. The Hon. Minister of Lands,—This is a copy of the Land Board's minute, which covers all that is required by section 117.—Wμ. C. Kensington, U.S. 5/6/08. U.S.,—File with papers.—R. McNab. 5/6/08.

Telegram.—Urgent. Under-Secretary, Lands, Wellington. Auckland, 6/6/08. Hkfkrhing your wire sth inst., regret being .out of town yesterday. Remember bringing your memo, re issuing title direct to T. K. Macdonald before Land Board in Committee, when exception was taken, and power to do so questioned, it being contended that title should in first case issue to City Council; but think that, after more than once again reading over to Board your memo., which I fancy conveyed Cabinet's decision in matter, it was passed. The Board's minutes, however, show what was actually done. John Strauchon, Commissioner, Crown Lands.
