to improve the interior, and give an additional room for private letter-boxes, and a new instrumentroom ; the work has not been gone on with. In addition to the above, many small repairs were done. Hokitika. —Lunatic Asylum : A quantity of material was supplied, principally to be worked up by the inmates. In the post-and-telegraph office the work of supplying and fitting in new safes and repairs and painting in progress last year was completed. The sergeant's house, police-station, was repaired and painted. The repairing and repainting of the police-station building is in progress. The Supreme Court has been repaired and painted, some renovations to furniture and fittings done, and new covering for the floor provided. A contract has been let to build an additional room, and also a strong-room to the Magistrate's Court. Beefton. —The. post-and-telegraph office has been repaired, and both the interior and exterior has been painted. A contract has been let for the erection of a constable's cottage, some fencing has been done at the Clerk of Court's residence, and repairs to the Survey Office. Boss. —The post-and-telegraph office has been repaired and painted, and the fencing renewed. A new wash-house and other improvements have been made to the constable's house. Ahaura. —The police-station has been repaired and painted. Eenewals, repairs, and painting are in progress at the Courthouse. Kumara. —The house of the Clerk of Court has been repaired and painted ; repairs to the Courthouse are in progress. Brunner. —Some small additions and repairs have been done at the police-station. Kanieri. —The police-station has been repaired and painted. Canterbury District. The exterior of the Provincial Buildings, Christchurch, have been throughly overhauled, repaired, and painted. A new flagpole has been erected on the tower. The interior of the Council chamber, the public rooms in the Deeds Office, and several other rooms have been renovated. An additional strong-room and an additional safe have been provided. Courthouses. The interior of the Supreme Court has been thoroughly cleaned, a new cork carpet laid on the centre of the Court-room floor, and the other floor-covering and furniture cleaned and repaired. Sundry repairs have been done to the Magistrate's Court, and to its drainage and water services. Temuka. —A new Courthouse in brick has been built by contract, and the grounds fenced. The Courthouses at Amberley, Eangiora, and Timaru have been repaired and renovated. Timaru Gaol. —Some improvements in the drains have been made, and the water-pipes renewed. Police-stations. Christchurch.— The constables' cottages and some of the officers' cottages have been renovated. Two temporary cells have been converted into an office, and other repairs done. A pump has been provided to fill the tanks. Phillipstown. —Various small repairs to buildings and drains have been done to the police buildings. Addington. —The police-station has been repaired and renovated. Ashburton. —Eepairs have been done to sergeant's quarters. Geraldine.— Improvements have been made in the kitchen at this station. Timaru. —The detective's quarters have been completed, and a new house for the sergeant is well advanced. Some of the rooms in the constable's house have been renovated, and a new range provided. Eepairs to the gas, water, and drainage services have been done. Glenavy. —Extensive additions have been made to the police buildings, and the grounds fenced. Post- and Telegraph-offices. Christchurch.—A brick safe has been built next the mail-room and fittings supplied. The floor of the savings-bank and part of the private letter-box lobby floor has been renewed. The walls of the mail-room were thoroughly cleaned, and the whole of the rooms and staircases in the building have been renovated. Linoleum has been laid in all the public rooms of the savings-bank, post-office, and telegraph-office. Sumner. —A new post-office has been built and fitted up. New Brighton. —The post-office has been distempered and papered throughout. Papanui. —A house has been bought, altered, and fitted up as a post-office. Woolston and Linwood. —Buildings have been rented and fitted and furnished as postoffices. Lyttelton. —Extensive additions, alterations, and renovations to the post-office are in progress. Ashburton. —The erection of a new post-office in brick, in place of the one burnt down, will shortly be completed. Timaru. —The grounds have been improved and a new cart-road made. The roof has been repaired and new snow-boards provided; new skylights have been fixed in the mail-room. The outside woodwork has been painted, and several rooms renovated. Hanmer Springs. —A new post-office is being built by contract. Kaikoura. —A residence for the Postmaster is in course of erection.
